With the State testing window coming to a close, we wanted to give everyone an idea of what we have planned for the last month of school and some of our plans for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. May 3rd is an early release day for our students. On May 5th, to celebrate the end of testing and to show our appreciation for all the hard work the students have put in, we are having an ice cream party and field day in the afternoon. The week of May 8th our students will begin working on our school vegetable garden. This garden will be the center point of our science program next school year. May 16th is our end of the year field trip to Busch Gardens. This will be an extended day field trip and there are still spots available. We have not finalized a date, but we will be have an Open House in mid-May for our current students and the community. May 26th is and early release day for the students. May 29th there is no school due to the Memorial Day holiday. May 31st is the last day of school and it is an early release day for all students.
Looking toward the new school year, we are very excited about the changes in store here at MSAS. We will be having an Open House for the students and parents to meet the teachers on August 3rd. Classes will begin on August 10th. As for the changes in store, our old Kindergarten playground is being converted into a vegetable garden and outdoor science classroom. The students will also be rehabilitating our old Monet’s Garden area with all Florida native and drought resistant species of plants, and a butterfly habitat. All PE will be held at the end of the day and will be highly structured will 9 activities that the student will rotate through one per week. In the classrooms, we will be teaching through a school-wide theme-based style, that includes themes such as Florida, Space, and Marine Life. One of the biggest changes we are making next year is extending the school day by 30 minutes, so release will now be at 3:00pm. This will allow us to increase the time students spend in science, social studies, and art by 15 minutes each. We will have before and after care for students again next year at the same $10/day rate. Morning care will start at 6:30am and after care will run until 6:00pm. Any student that is not picked up by 3:15pm will be sent to after care and the parent will be charge the after care rate. The schedule for the 2017-18 school year at MSAS is listed below.
